3 billion people depend on wood, coal or animal waste for cooking and heating. In total, 13% of the world’s population does not have access to modern electricity according to the UN. Sustainable Development Goal 7.1 aims to ensure universal and equitable access to a reliable and modern energy service at an affordable cost by 2030.
Sanitation
2.4 billion people, or 35% of the world’s population, lack basic sanitation facilities, such as toilets or latrines, and at least 892 million people continue to practice open defecation according to the UN. Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 aims to ensure universal and equitable access to adequate sanitation and hygiene services by 2030.
Solid waste
2 billion tons of waste are generated worldwide each year, of which only 39% is collected in developing countries according to the World Bank. Sustainable Development Goal 12.4 aims to establish environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout its life cycle, and to significantly reduce their release to the air, water and land.
Water
2.1 billion people, or 30% of the world’s population, do not have access to domestic drinking water services, and 844 million do not even have a basic water service, according to the WHO. Sustainable Development Goal 6 .1 aims to ensure universal and equitable access to safe drinking water at an affordable cost by 2030.
