Cameroon has the 3rd largest hydroelectric potential in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, the country is struggling to meet the demand for electricity: only 63% of the total population has access to electricity, 23% of which is in rural areas. The sector also faces other challenges, as network performance is poor: high losses, numerous supply interruptions and voltage drops.
In the Sahel, territories are facing situations of vulnerability, crisis and conflict. Entire regions are falling into “vulnerability traps” where social, economic and institutional determinants are combined, under the accelerating effect of climate change and demographic transformations. Households’ access to a drinking water supply service appears to be a sine qua non condition for reducing their vulnerability and the fragilities that exacerbate crises.
Considered as the “water tower of West Africa” because of the many rivers that take their source there, Guinea is however still struggling to supply its secondary cities with drinking water. In 18 of them, the situation is alarming, with a rate of access to the Société des Eaux de Guinée (SEG) network varying between 14% and 59% in 2019. The situation is even more worrying in the six regional capitals of Guinea, where the rate of access to water via the SEG never exceeds 35%.
SUNREF is the green credit line dedicated to companies and developed by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) since 2007. Its vocation is to support companies’ investments through technical assistance and a long-term credit line made available to local financial institutions.
The Government of Benin wishes to ensure access to drinking water for all throughout the country by 2024, a much more ambitious deadline than that of the SDGs, which sets it for 2030. To achieve this, a very ambitious investment program, estimated at around FCFA 440 billion in urban areas, has already been launched.

From its establishment, Phœnix has been committed to a comprehensive environmental approach aimed at limiting the ecological footprint of our activity. This approach was formalized by a CSR Charter integrating the challenges of sustainable development both in the strategy of the company, its day-to-day management and in the management of projects carried out for our customers. Our international activity has required our employees to travel, generating greenhouse gas emissions estimated at 26 tons of CO2 since the creation of Phœnix. We have decided to offset these emissions by contributing to the agroforestry and reforestation project with cocoa farmers in Ivory Coast, funded by Reforest’Action. The Ivory Coast is one of the 21 countries in which we operate, with 6 missions out of the 40 carried out.
