Feasibility study for a centralized collective sanitation system in Kigali
Rwanda is committed to achieving ambitious sanitation targets, including 100% coverage of its territory by 2024. The capital Kigali currently has no collective sanitation system, and the two main domestic sanitation methods used are septic tanks and pit latrines.
Artelia, with the support of Phœnix, is currently carrying out a feasibility study to design a centralized sanitation system for part of the city, more specifically in three districts of Kigali (Kicukiro, Gasabo and Nyarugenge). These districts are densely populated, covering a population of approximately 1 million.
The implementation of centralized infrastructure, based on watersheds, will ensure better management of wastewater generated by this part of the city, in order to reduce environmental impacts (notably surface and groundwater pollution) and associated public health problems.
This study is supported by the French Treasury’s General Directorate through a FASEP, and by the national operator WASAC. Phœnix is responsible for the institutional aspects, the implementation of a survey of 1,000 households, the analysis of the population’s willingness to pay, the economic and financial analysis of the project, and, finally, the realization of the business plan.
