In the Sahel, territories are facing situations of vulnerability, crisis and conflict. Entire regions are falling into “vulnerability traps” where social, economic and institutional determinants are combined, under the accelerating effect of climate change and demographic transformations. Households’ access to a drinking water supply service appears to be a sine qua non condition for reducing their vulnerability and the fragilities that exacerbate crises.
Considered as the “water tower of West Africa” because of the many rivers that take their source there, Guinea is however still struggling to supply its secondary cities with drinking water. In 18 of them, the situation is alarming, with a rate of access to the Société des Eaux de Guinée (SEG) network varying between 14% and 59% in 2019. The situation is even more worrying in the six regional capitals of Guinea, where the rate of access to water via the SEG never exceeds 35%.
